Project Moohan: Samsung's First Micro OLED XR Headset

Samsung’s annual Unpacked 2025 event is just around the corner, and expectations are soaring. While the spotlight will once again be on the next-generation Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, this year may mark a pivotal moment for Samsung’s extended reality (XR) ambitions—with the rumored unveiling of Project Moohan, a next-gen headset powered by cutting-edge micro OLED display technology.

Project Moohan: Pioneering Android XR with micro OLED Brilliance

First teased in December 2024, Project Moohan is Samsung’s upcoming XR headset, developed in collaboration with Google and expected to become the first device running the new Android XR operating system. What sets Moohan apart is its integration of mini OLED display panels, known for their superior brightness, contrast, and pixel density—key for delivering lifelike visuals in immersive environments.
Despite earlier hints that the device would launch in 2025, no official date or product name has been announced. But according to prominent leaker “Panda Flash,” Project Moohan may finally be unveiled—along with a launch timeline—at the upcoming Unpacked event.

From Google I/O to a Home-Grown Debut

Many expected Samsung to introduce more details about Project Moohan at the recent Google I/O conference, but both Samsung and Google stayed silent. Sources now indicate Samsung has chosen to take full control of the narrative, making Unpacked 2025 the likely stage for the headset’s debut.
Samsung may also be planning a home-market-first launch in South Korea, followed by a global expansion—a phased rollout strategy similar to Apple’s Vision Pro, and one that could give Project Moohan a strong domestic foundation.

Micro OLED Displays, Qualcomm Power, and Full XR Feature Set

Although full technical specifications are still under wraps, several key features of Project Moohan have surfaced from internal demos and prototype leaks. Confirmed details include:

a. Sony-sourced micro OLED displays, offering ultra-high contrast and pixel-perfect visuals for XR use

b. Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset for next-level performance

c. Pancake optics for compact design and enhanced visual clarity

d. Automatic IPD (interpupillary distance) adjustment

e. Integrated eye tracking and gesture recognition

f. Modular magnetic light-shielding visor

g. External detachable battery pack

h. Support for optional VR controller accessories

The micro OLED technology in particular stands out—providing higher brightness and greater color accuracy than traditional LCD or OLED solutions, making Project Moohan a serious contender in the high-end XR space.

AR Smart Glasses Also in the Pipeline?

In addition to the XR headset, Samsung is reportedly developing AR smart glasses, which may also feature micro OLED displays to deliver discreet yet high-resolution visuals in a lightweight form factor. These glasses could pose a direct challenge to Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, positioning Samsung as a strong new player in the consumer smart eyewear segment.

Looking Ahead: Countdown to Unpacked Begins

Though the official date for Samsung Unpacked 2025 has yet to be confirmed, sources point to early July in New York City. With the event fast approaching, excitement is building not just for the new Galaxy Z foldables, but for what could be Samsung’s most ambitious leap in spatial computing.

If rumors hold true, Project Moohan—powered by micro OLED display and Android XR—could redefine the boundaries of immersive experience, marking Samsung’s entry into the next chapter of  XR innovation.
